Medically Complex 2 of 3

This week we discussed diagnosis, diseases & conditions. We discussed everything from Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS), to Shaken Baby Syndrome (SBS) to Substance Exposed Neonatal (SEN) and lots of others in between.

FAS causes mental and physical defects and is typically a chronic disease. The most interesting thing I learned about this is a physical defect of a child with FAS is a smooth philtrum. After learning this, it's hard not to look at adults for this symptom.
An infant with SEN is typically something the child can overcome and grow out of and doesn't leave physical defects. These children can have withdrawal symptoms beginning at 72 hours and can continue for up to 6 months. They are typically easily irritable and sensitive to light, sound, and smells. We learned different ways to help calm and sooth these infants such as speaking quietly and turning down lights.

These instructors are definitely interested in keeping us involved. This week we had a "Myth or Fact" worksheet to keep us awake. Here are a couple of the questions:

  • You can catch poison ivy from someone who has it.
    • Myth or Fact
  • It's easier for a couple to conceive if the man wears boxer shorts instead of briefs
    • Myth or Fact
  • Eating turkey causes drowsiness
    • Myth or Fact
  • Before modern pregnancy tests, if a rabbit injected with a woman's urine died, the woman was pregnant.
    • Myth or Fact
  • Your heart stops beating every time you sneeze.
    • Myth or Fact
  • Homemade chicken soup is good for a cold.
    • Myth or Fact

Answers to come!

One more class and then we are set. I think one of the only things we have left to do is practice installing the car seat into our vehicles so we aren't frantically trying to figure it out on our way to pick up a child.

35 days or less until we are licensed!
