Home Safety Inspection Checklist

Here's our list of items we need to do in order to pass our home safety inspection. We don't know the exact date of the inspection but it's sometime before our class ends on June 18th. I'm sure all of you fellow parents out there remember going through this when you were expecting...


UPDATE: Scheduled for Wednesday, May 29th!
DOUBLE UPDATE: We passed!

  • Household cleaning supplies are stored up high or if stored at ground level, in a locked cabinet
    • Spray cleaners, laundry detergent, dishwasher detergent
  • Highly toxic substances are kept in locked storage
    • Bleach, roach killer, spray paint, gasoline
  • Alcohol needs to be safeguarded i.e. locked or on a high shelf
  • Current rabies vaccine certificate on premises for Miss Maggie
  • Bathtub has slip-resistance surface
  • All medications including prescription AND over the counter are maintained in locked storage
  • A carbon-monoxide detector alarm if the residence has an appliance or heating device using gas
  • Extension cords are not used on a permanent basis
    • We will need to relocate our alarm monitor
  • Hot water temperature must not exceed 120 degrees
  • Flammables are stored more than 3 feet from water heaters
  • Working smoke detector (as opposed to a non-working one) in the following areas:
    • Living Area
    • Each bedroom
  • A functioning fire extinguisher (again as opposed to a non-functioning) with a minimum rating of 2A 10BC in the kitchen area
  • A written emergency evacuation plan

  1. This is intense! But I guess it's things you kinda have to think about. I would never think of some of these things - even though I think they're mostly common sense.

    1. I don't think very many people actually do these preparations when they are expecting but I guess we'll be extra ready! I didn't even include everything, maybe I should add the actual checklist link in case anyone would like some additional reading...

    4. Wow - that's a REALLY long list. I would never think to think of some of these things... and yeah, makes you wonder how many expecting parents do these! Wow!
